The nsyilxcen Story of the Name Kelowna
The city of Kelowna gets its name from a story about an early settler who lived in a q̓ʷc̓iʔ (pithouse); when he crawled out one day, some sqilxʷ (Indians) walking by joked that he looked like a bear emerging from its den and called out kmxtus (“black bear’s face”). When the townsite was established in 1892, this story was considered for the city’s name, but kmxtus was thought too harsh-sounding, so the sqilxʷ word for male grizzly bear was chosen instead.
